Privacy policy
Last updated October 15, 2026
The short version: Tallyskein has no accounts, no ads and no tracking cookies. Your projects and patterns are stored on your own device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose a feature that needs it, like Google Drive backup, and then it goes to your own Google Drive.
What stays on your device
Your projects, counters, notes, reminders, markup and pattern files are saved in your browser's storage on your device (or in the Tallyskein app's storage on a phone). Tallyskein does not have a server copy of them. Clearing your browser's site data deletes them, so keep a backup.
Google Drive backup (optional)
- If you connect Google Drive, Tallyskein saves a backup of your projects and patterns as a file in a "Tallyskein" folder in your Google Drive.
- Tallyskein asks only for the
drive.filepermission, which means it can see and change only the files it creates. It cannot see anything else in your Drive. It also reads your email address so the app can show which account is connected. - To keep backups working, your Google sign-in is kept in an encrypted cookie on your own browser. Tallyskein does not store it, your email address or your backup on any server; the backup goes straight from your device to your Drive.
- You can disconnect at any time in Settings, which also revokes Tallyskein's access. You can also remove access in your Google Account under Security › Third-party access. Your backup file stays in your Drive until you delete it.
- Tallyskein's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Your Google data is used only to back up and restore your Tallyskein projects; it is never sold, used for advertising, or shared with anyone else.
Ravelry (optional)
If you connect Ravelry, Tallyskein can list and download the PDF patterns in your Ravelry library. Your Ravelry sign-in is kept in an encrypted cookie on your browser, and pattern files pass through Tallyskein's server only to be delivered to your device. Nothing is stored on the server.
Importing from a link or cloud storage
When you import a pattern from a web address, Tallyskein's server fetches that page for you and sends it back to your device; it isn't kept. The Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox pickers are run by those services, and only the file you pick comes to Tallyskein.
Voice counting (optional)
Voice counting uses your browser's built-in speech recognition. Tallyskein only looks for words like "next", "back" and "undo" and never records or keeps audio. Depending on your browser, the speech may be processed by your browser's maker (for example, Google for Chrome) under their own privacy policy.
Feedback and bug reports
If you send feedback from the app, your message goes to the developer by email and may be posted, without your email address, as an issue in Tallyskein's GitHub project. You can add your email if you'd like a reply. Bug reports include basic device details (app version, browser, screen size), which are shown to you before sending. Nothing about your projects or patterns is included.
Anonymous usage statistics
Tallyskein uses Vercel Web Analytics, which counts visits without cookies and without identifying you: which pages are opened, the kind of device and browser, the country, and the site you came from. It also counts a few anonymous events, such as "pattern imported" or "counted 10 rows". It never includes project names, pattern text or anything about you.
Children
Tallyskein is a general-audience app and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
